Interpersonal violence is one such problem where children and youth are subjected to abuse by adults. When this occurs in school, society sees it with a jaundiced eye; when it happens at home or in the neighborhood, however, there is little outcry against it. This mindset needs to change. We can all make an impact from any level – from individual to company level – on how we treat others and promote equality. Let’s work for a world where everyone feels welcomed and respected where everyone is safe!
Interpersonal violence is a serious concern in our society today. Its victims are children and youth who live with the fear of someone taking their life, inflicting pain or making them the victim of crimes. Diepsloot Youth Project is one such organization that works toward eradicating interpersonal violence from children and youth.
It is estimated that nearly one out of every three children experience some form of interpersonal violence. This includes physical or sexual abuse, or the witnessing of such abuses. These children may not even know what a safe and nurturing environment looks like; for them, it’s all about surviving.
But there is hope! A new program in Diepsloot aims to change this by bringing together social workers and youth leaders in an effort to build a supportive community where children can feel safe. Through regular meetings and activities, they are working to create strong relationships between kids and their parents, as well as teach them skills that can help them thrive when faced with adversity in the future.
