When it comes to something involving your loved ones, you aren’t too keen on anything else. For many families around the world, visiting a family member in a hospital or jail is a routine affair. In South Africa’s Diepsloot neighborhood, near Johannesburg, this is not so. On Saturday night, when we heard that a mob had attacked an elderly man in the neighborhood, we were concerned and wanted to make sure he was okay.

So we decided to visit him in the hospital and see him for ourselves how he was doing. We are happy to say that he is recovering well thanks to his family’s love and support!

An otherwise good morning turned bad for one Diepsloot family on Saturday, when the son of a woman who is employed with a MNC was mob-lynched by some youth in the area. According to police, the accused are absconding and no arrests have been made so far. Despite all this, people from all walks of life have come out in support of the victim and condemned the incident.

One such instance was by a group of children who visited the family of the victim. That too under protection of police.

Diepsloot is a historical neighbourhood of Johannesburg. Situated on the eastern side of the city, it houses many of the city’s immigrants. However, the neighborhood has recently gone through a rough phase with incidents of crime and gang-related violence on the rise. This project aims to introduce a new generation to the people and culture of Diepsloot, while empowering them to take up arms against crime. With plans to expand their operations in other underprivileged neighborhoods, they’re leading by example as change agents in society.

It is shocking to note that the family of a victim of mob violence lives in fear and uncertainty. When this attack took place recently, they were left with no choice but to move to some other place not knowing when they’ll feel secure again.

But now, you can bring them back home with Daswandh Youth Project’s Diepsloot Youth Project visit held last week. The youth project took it upon themselves to show support for the victim and his family by visiting them and spreading awareness about the incident. They also made an impassioned plea asking people to come together in peace and unite against such acts of violence.

This visit was just one of many ways through which the youth project is working towards a better tomorrow where crime does not have any place.

Diepsloot is already a symbol of crime and violence in our society. And now, the youth there have created a group to stand for justice and eradicate crime from the neighbourhood. They have visited the family of one of their neighbours who was attacked on Thursday, and wanted to share power with them. The youth said that they will not let go until justice is done and…

cowardly people like him are sent to jail for life.
