On April 28, a 25-year-old police constable was shot dead by unidentified assailants in Diepsloot. The incident has snowballed into an all-round protest against the cops and authorities.
While the cops are being dubbed as ‘thandas'(strangers), innocent citizens are being made out to be terror-linked and misguiding youth, who are in turn egging their friends on to join protests. It’s absurd. We want justice for Ajay Singh, a resident of Diepsloot!
Diepsloot is a place where, unfortunately, crime has become very common. This time, the residents of this area have finally decided that they would take their anger out on those who commit crimes in the area.
The youth of Diepsloot project has decided to take action and make their presence felt everytime there is crime happening in their neighbourhood. And now, people are following suit and taking up arms.
Cop killing is not an ordinary thing. Yes, we have seen many such incidents in the past, but what if it happens in your neighbourhood? What if the cop and the residents are from same community? What then? When this question crossed our minds, we decided to visit this area and find out firsthand why locals are upset with the cops.
We found a mix of emotions on the faces of people as they walked towards Diepsloot station with their kids. Some were sad, some were angry, some had mixed feelings. But one thing was clear-these locals wanted to express their anger against cops by walking together in a silent protest. It was a unique way of showing displeasure and in that very moment, we understood what drives Dasloot Youth Project and why it has made so many difference!
On the night of Sunday, June 8, a Cop killing in Diepsloot was reported in the media and the people took their anger out on various platforms including social media. The Cop killing seems to have happened due to some family feud or personal enmity but we are not sure about that yet. Anyway, what’s certain is that the residents here do not tolerate such kind of violence and are demanding justice to be done!
The community of Diepsloot has always been known for its calm nature. But in the past few days, things have changed rapidly. The main reason behind this is cop killing case of Constable Siyabonga Ngobeni of Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP). This case has left the residents of Diepsloot fuming with anger and they have decided to take it out in one form or the other.
Ngobeni was killed on June 30 while he was on duty. A mob went there to protest his killing and when they got arrested, they rained down garbage on them.
