Crime is everywhere and it’s frustrating to see that children are being targeted by criminals. Too many kids get into trouble without getting caught. The youth of today have become the barometer of our society, so why can’t we expect better from them? In the words of Abraham Lincoln, “In every age the youth are the bright hopeful buds of the time to come.”
This project is set out to change that perception forever and make Diepsloot a place of fear and anger for criminals only. Youth from all over the projects take part in various activities like street plays, mock trials, skits, etc., which not only helps them become more confident but also makes them aware of their surroundings and takes note of suspicious characters around them.
When you live in a place where your every move is watched, it is easy to start feeling anxious. And when that place is your own home, it becomes even more difficult to live there peacefully. This is the story of Diepsloot Youth Project’s (DYP) initiative to breathe life into this forgotten area.
DYP has been working towards making the area greener by planting trees and gardens, while at the same time providing a safe haven and rehabilitation centre for displaced youth. Their initiatives are working hard to lay the foundations for a new way of life in Diepsloot, not just from inside their office premises but from everywhere across South Africa.
The story of Diepsloot is both sad and angry. It has been exploited for decades, and the youth here have been hit by its full force. This project takes them in, gives them a safe haven and educates them so that they can build a better future.
Like any other project on social media, we need your help! Can you spare some change? Or maybe you have something to add? We will be forever grateful! Join us in making Diepsloot Youth Project’s journey smoother with your support!
Diepsloot is a place of fear and anger. Located in Johannesburg, it is close to Soweto and other places where the struggle for equality is at its peak. children are being subjected to violence and discrimination because of their skin color or religion. A small team of volunteers wants to change this by changing lives one youth at a time. They organize workshops and discussions on how to tackle these issues in schools as well as colleges in the area. Whether you’re black, white, Muslim, Christian or any other minority, we all need to stand up for what’s right and work together for a better tomorrow!
Diepsloot is known for its notorious gang culture and associated crime, but the youth population there seems to be unaffected. In fact, they are even seen as leaders of the gang. This misconception comes from the elders who don’t want anything to change in their neighbourhood, and also because they don’t understand what’s going on.
DYP is trying to break this misconception by mentoring youngDiepsloot residents into becoming better citizens. But what makes it even more special is that they’re doing this without any monetary incentive.
