Who can feel calm during a protest? Not us, that’s for sure. Diepsloot youth Project is one of the few organisations who understands this and knows how to deliver peace amidst chaos. Youth leaders like Siyanda Mngomezulu, Niki Tshabalala-Msimang, Zandile Gumede, and more have taken it upon themselves to provide counselling for victims of violence and to pacify protesters. Through their efforts, people of all colours and creeds feel safe in their neighbourhoods.

The youth leaders of Diepsloup are truly inspiring!

Situations like these are familiar to us, as we often witness protests and demonstrations breaking out in the vicinity. But what about Diepsloot? The Youth Project Diepsloot team has been closely monitoring the developments. So when the day dawned, we decided to catch up on what was happening in Germany’s biggest slum. And boy, did we have a surprise in store for ourselves!

What started out with peaceful protests ended up with violent clashes between protesters and police. The youth there seem to be frustrated by the political situation in their country, especially after last year’s elections that saw a change of government for the first time in 20 years. So they’re taking out their frustrations on the streets by vandalizing public property and blocking traffic! How can anyone expect peace in an atmosphere like this?

We understand your frustration about everything that seems to be going wrong in this world today. But our Youth Project will make sure every child grows up knowing how to respect his/her boundaries and everyone else’s alike! Let’s get it together and make things right!

What happens when you build a school, but the learners have no respect for it? Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP) is an educational organisation with its roots in Diepsloot. The youth of this township have been instrumental in building schools and other community facilities, but as of today, they haven’t learnt the importance of respecting things that are built by their own hands.

What if there’s a need to show them that violence won’t solve anything? That what goes around comes around? What if you want them to grow up to be respectful human beings who work together towards a common goal rather than just settling scores at any cost? Then it becomes necessary to teach them the art of peace. At DYP we do just that. We teach our youth through soft skills like communication and negotiation – important tools for everyday life. And we also make sure that they understand the importance of abiding by rules so that they can take on adult responsibilities with ease.

The second day of violent protests in Diepsloot has left the region tense. Seven youth were killed and 20 injured in police firing during the protests. Local shops, schools, and colleges have completely shut down. People are taking cover in their homes, unsure about what to expect the next few hours. With a heavy heart and an urge to do something, Youth Project took it upon themselves to help those in need. They collected blankets, warm clothes, and food items such as canned food, bread rolls, vegetables etc and distributed them among the locals who were stuck indoors due to fear or inconvenience.

Clashes and protests are the most frustrating yet exciting times to be in a city. You can never really anticipate what will happen next. Yesterday, Diepslotto was tense yet calm as the roads were blocked by protesters after a cow was beaten to death on a busy main road. How is it even possible? Diepsloot Youth Project is an organisation that organises events for their youth members so that they can participate in participation and create awareness about issues affecting the community. Maybe one day, when everyone else feels like running away from tough situations, you too will know how it feels to stand up for what’s right!
