All roads lead to Diepsloot Cemetery. This is where South Africans have gone to pay their respects to ancestors and say their final farewells. Over the years, it has become a hotbed of crime, drug trafficking, and illegal immigration. But thanks to Diepsloot Youth Project, this cemetery is now a veritable oasis in the middle of a sprawling metro city.
With the support of local businesses and community leaders,Diepsloot Youth Project has been working hard over the past few years to change perceptions about cemeteries and make them places of peace and serenity once again. They are doing an excellent job at it!
Diepsloot is one of the oldest and largest cemeteries in South Africa. It houses the remains of thousands of people, from elderly people to young children, who have passed away.
In recent years, there has been a growing interest in visiting cemeteries and researching their history. When you visit Diepsloot Cemetery, you are not just seeing graves; you are seeing traces of lives lived by South Africans.
A photo essay capturing a slice of life in Diepsloot, Johannesburg. Formed by a group of youth who know the importance of keeping a old cemetery alive, they decided to adopt it and make it their own. Through cleanliness campaigns, they give the residents a reason to smile every Sunday. The youth also spread awareness on the history of the cemetery and its residents through various talks and workshops.
The group has won hearts with their initiative and is working towards forming an organization where they can continue their work for years to come!
