Youth unemployment is a global issue that affects millions of people every year. In South Africa, the youth unemployment rate hovers around 25% – 30%. For those living in rural areas, the numbers are even higher. And when you add to that youth who have run away from their homes and communities because of crime, it feels like there’s no light at the end of the tunnel. But try telling Diepsloot residents that! Now, when these youths feel helpless and hopeless, they turn to Diepsloot Youth Project for guidance and support. This project was founded by an inspiring woman named Bridgit Reisig in 2013 with the goal of empowering disadvantaged youth in her community. She runs programs like literacy classes and sports training camps to help these young people thrive and reach their full potential.

This project has changed a lot of lives for the better – just look at Nehemiah Marais! He used to be one of those kids living on the streets with nothing but anger to show for his life – until he found solace and support here. Today he’s putting his skills to use as a handyman in his community and contributing to its growth day by day. This is just one example of the amazing work being done

Diepsloot is a community that has always felt safe, but lately its residents have witnessed an alarming increase in crime. Residents say that criminals are roaming freely, not fearing any consequences for their actions. It’s time the authorities take note of this and act quickly to restore peace in the area.

The Youth Project on Crime is stepping up to make a difference. The project will empower young people in the area to take ownership of crime against them and stand up for themselves, making Diepsloot a safer place to live and grow up. The project will also give these young leaders the skills they need to become active and engaged citizens who can make a difference in their communities.

If you know this community, then there’s a good chance you know the youth project in it. The name speaks for itself – offering shelter and rehabilitation to young people who have been affected by crime or difficulties in life. But what about the criminals that have inhabited this area? How do they feel about it? While we can’t answer this question, we can say that these criminals sure do hate Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP)!

The youth project aims at taking care of these kids so they don’t end up becoming another statistic on the rising number of crime-affected kids in South Africa. So whenever the crimes are committed, the criminals joining hands with anyone who’d want to put an end to such a project.

Crimes happen in every neighborhood and no one is immune to it. However, there are certain areas where crime tends to be more rampant than other places. One such area is Diepsloot. The community has been fighting for years against criminals, who have made its lives miserable.

Diepsloot Youth Project was founded with the sole aim of helping the youth of the vicinity stand up for themselves, take ownership of their space, and end their affiliation with corruption and criminality. Through various workshops and sports programs, they help them learn about life skills like negotiation and self-defense, enabling them to protect themselves from predators. Their efforts have paid off; multiple youths from the area have joined the police force, are studying in professional institutes, or are getting a job! This project is changing lives by making a difference on an individual level, which is commendable.

Youth today is intelligent and understands things fast. So, why does it take criminals so long to figure out their modus operandi? In the words of a local resident, ‘youth should be able to think on their feet’. The Diepsloot Youth Project thinks the same, and wants criminals to know that youth will not be cowed down by them.

DYP is a community-based group that works towards making Diepsloot safer for everyone. They organize different programs that educate residents about crime prevention tactics and increase awareness about safety issues in our community.
