An unaddressed line of enquiries on crime reduction comes in for the youth project. Crime is rampant in the area, and is seen to have increased recently. The need to address this problem swiftly has become apparent as many have been affected by it. To make it even more challenging, half of the township lacks electricity and thus communication is out of the question in most areas.
With this in mind, Diepsloot Youth Project has stepped up to solve some of these complications. Since June 2016, a team led by law enforcers has been attempting to fix the power problem in parts of Diepsloot that don’t have access to electricity. There’s still a long way to go before all are beneficiaries of this project, but at least they’re taking one step closer every day!
Crime is committed in the dark, so it’s only natural that locals have started agitating for electricity in their area since a long time. But now, things seem to be changing for the better. Last month, the Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP) installed solar panels on several rooftops of local houses. This project is being implemented as a part of DYP’s ‘safety and security’ initiative where locals get together to take up responsibility for maintaining law and order in the area. According to DYP founder Sunny Gouda, this initiative has helped tackle various crimes in the locality and reduced such crimes by 40% over a period of 3 years.
People living in the Diepsloot area are tired of crime. They want their streets to be free from criminal activities and want electricity to reduce crimes in the area. For years, residents have been pleading with authorities to install electricity in their areas but nothing has changed till date.
In 2017, they decided to take a joint effort to end crimes and irregularities in their neighborhood by installing electricity. They held public meetings, formed groups, registered themselves under different associations and took part in various outreach activities. Finally, they got it! The installation of electricity is done and now they can sleep peacefully at night without fearing an attack or burglary in their houses.
The story is familiar: after dark, crime and violence run amok in Diepsloot. Residents are tired of fear and insecurity, but there is a need for change. As solar panels light up the area, residents can finally see the end in sight to their power woes.
Diehloot Youth Project has been delivering on its promise for years now. They have constructed over 12 solar power plants in the community where locals can avoid buying expensive kerosene and charge their electronic devices for free. And with each passing day, the number of beneficiaries grows by leaps and bounds thanks to people taking ownership of their surroundings and making a difference.
Do you know that one of the ways to reduce crime in a community is by providing electricity to its residents? That’s right! Although it may seem obvious, it’s surprising to know that many still do not consider it. Youth Project Diepsloot, a non-profit organization in South Africa, has been trying to change this perception for quite some time now. They believe that providing electricity will not only bring convenience and security to a neighborhood, but will also help foster economic opportunities.
With their approach being so powerful and effective, they have surely caught the attention of many! If you too want to contribute in making ‘Diepsloot’ the no-crime zone that we all know it can be, then join us in spreading awareness about Youth Project Diepsloot and making a difference in your community!
