‘Masks off!’, says the campaign’s name. And so these youth ask everyone to take off their mask and join them in practicing good sanitation and hygiene. The youth representatives want to change people’s mindset about what’s seen as ‘normal’ or ‘clean. They’ve taken it upon themselves to turn Diepsl
Diepsloot is a well-known name in the city of Johannesburg. It is infamous for being one of the poorest and most crime-ridden areas of the country. Although this area has been trying to shed its notorious image over the past few years, it still has a long way to go.
The youth of Diepsloot have taken upon themselves to change their community’s image. They stand out in their masks, donning all black to show that there are people who want to make a difference in the lives of others, whether they be before them or after them. This project has given many young people from Diepsloot an avenue through which they can contribute positively to society and grow as individuals by making a change in their surroundings.
It is time for us all to take notice and join hands with these young warriors!
Diepsloot is a notorious slum that’s home to people of all ages. The people living here face many challenges – poverty, crime, and unemployment being some of them. They shun masks and choose to live life with dignity. This Youth Project aims to change the perception of Diepsloot and create awareness about its residents in the society.
Project Coordinator: Nonton Ntahor
Ever wondered why Diepsloot residents don’t wear masks? Or why they shun such items? The answers lie in the Youth Project of Diepsloot. For the past seven years, this project has been working tirelessly to provide a qualitative education for underprivileged children living in the slum. Talk about making a difference!
The youth project is an initiative of Ekal Vidyalaya Society, a registered not-for-profit organization. They run a daycare, pre-school, and an elementary school in the slum. Since its inception, it has strived to make a difference in the lives of those who live there by providing quality education that will be useful in their future endeavours.
