Residents of Diepsloot in Johannesburg are well-known for having tough lives. They have grown to be experts in living with the constant stream of problems that the area throws at its residents. This is why Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP) was started by local volunteers and community members who wanted to make a difference in the lives of their neighbors. DYP provides a wide range of services that aim to help those in need, both physically and mentally. But perhaps one of its most important services is offering a safe haven for those who need it most – kids who are struggling with life on their own or who have been victims of crime or abuse.

“We see so many kids come through our doors, but we feel like we’re able to save the most,” said Mandy, a program manager at DYP. “Some kids get really upset when they realize they’ve been coming here for a while now, because they don’t want anyone to know that they’re struggling.” But Mandy and her team aren’t deterred by this; they know that it’s important to be there whenever a kid needs them the most.

The youth of Diepsloot have a vision – to make the world a better place. To achieve this, they are working tirelessly to address some of South Africa’s most pressing issues. From poverty to crime, corruption and terrorism, they refuse to accept these problems as inevitable. Through their work, they aim to change perceptions and build a better future for all.
