What if you had a place where you could go, where you won’t feel judged, where women are not being killed on the streets? Well, that’s exactly what Diepsloot Youth Project is trying to do. It’s an all-in-one center for different kinds of support and counseling for young women who have been victims of abuse, human trafficking, and other forms of violence. A safe space that understands their pain and gives them the strength to move forward.

DYP has been changing the lives of many young women who visit it every day. From providing them with job skills to assisting with university applications or even gifting them with a safety net while they rebuild their lives, DYP is ensuring that every woman has a second chance at life.

Where women were being killed on the street’ – that’s how we used to describe Diepsloot, a township in Johannesburg.

It was only in 2013 that this area was transformed into a Youth Project – where they started to work towards solving their own issues and building their own futures. As youth leaders, we are proud of what they have achieved so far, and excited about what lies ahead. We call them ‘Light-keepers’, because their bright lights can be seen from far and wide, shining hope for a better tomorrow.

Women are being trafficked, raped and killed in Diepsloot. They are being stripped of the very freedom they once held dear. This is why Diepsloot Youth Project is working tirelessly to raise awareness on the evils of human trafficking and gender-based violence. Their efforts have been so fruitful that they have received a commendation letter from National Commission for Women, Delhi under the category ‘Best work by a social organisation’. The letter reads: “DYP has played an effective role in making women feel safe on their streets. They have initiated a dialogue between men and women, young and old on this issue so that this heinous crime can be stopped forever.

Diepsloot Youth Project is a platform for empowering young women in the area. It aims to break the hopelessness and silence that characterise women’s lives in the neighborhood. The program provides education, skills, and employment opportunities and promotes health and wellness. It also helps women rebuild their lives after trauma by providing access to services.

Children are everything. Let’s stand with them by contributing to this project and making Diepsloot a better place!

Diepsloot has been a notorious area for the murder of women. This is where the youth project Diepsloot Youth Project stepped in and wanted to change the situation by bringing about changes at grass-root level. With its non-adversarial approach, the youth project has started talking to these individuals and getting them involved in their programs. To make them cognizant of their surroundings, they arrange regular meetings and awareness sessions with important people of that locality. These are definitely some major steps forward in changing the negative perception around these areas and making it a better place to live in.
