Do you know that there is a town called Diepsloot but not many people know about it? It is located in Ekangala on the outskirts of Nairobi and it has been termed as the poorest township in the country.

Diewsloot Youth Project by Diepsloot Society is a special focus programme being run by the youth with an aim to integrate economics, social work and entrepreneurship in an environment that values all three. The youths get to understand the basics of business and entrepreneurship while tackling some of the social issues facing the town: TB, HIV, teen pregnancy, among others. The program also focuses on enhancing entrepreneurial skills through mentorship and networking.

The youth team works with various NGOs to make this project a success. In partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), they are running health camps for children and women, educating kids on HIV/AIDS prevention methods, building schools and kindergartens, among others.

Diepsloot is known for its high levels of unemployment, crime and poverty. However, it is also a place where there is a strong sense of community, and volunteers have started coming up to help and change things for the better with their initiatives. Youth Project is one such initiative that is working towards changing things for the better by teaching entrepreneurial skills to kids from Diepsloot.

Youth Project has been running for the past 2 years in partnership with local schools and businesses in Diepsloot, providing kids with an opportunity to learn valuable life skills through sustainable entrepreneurship. Participants attend classes regularly, get hands-on training from experienced entrepreneurs, run small businesses on campus or just participate in group activities while they’re there. YP Diepsloot will change lives by teaching kids to be confident enough to start their own business so that they can take control over their future!

We can all relate to the financial crunch that plagues us once in a while. That’s why we think of it as normal, but for people living in Diepsloot, it is no less than an aberration. Why is this township facing so many problems when other municipalities are making profits?

Diepsloot Youth Project is teaming up with Brand South Africa to give you the answers. Join us on June 1st as we take a look at Diepsloot and its economics.

What do you know about Diepsloot? We bet you have been hearing a lot about it, but still don’t have a clear idea of how big the township is. Let us help you by sharing some statistical facts:

Diepsloot is one of the largest townships in South Africa and has an area of 11 square kilometers. It has more than 31,000 people living there and is home to more than 527 businesses. In addition to this, there are about 438 schools and 87 mosques present in the area.

As per the statistics, Diepsloot gives employment to around 6500 people, which amounts to $28 million annually in wages. Moreover, it accounts for more than $2 billion worth of exports annually too. This makes it quite an important place in South Africa’s economy overall!

Diepsloot is one of the most impoverished townships in South Africa. For decades, residents have been dealing with issues of high unemployment and illiteracy. In order to shed light on the economics of these areas, Diepsloot Youth Project conducted a special focus group discussion on topics like non-formal employment opportunities, women empowerment, and other forms of entrepreneurship. Various stakeholders from different fields were invited to participate and share their views with the youth of Diepsloot.

Through this project, we hope to empower them with knowledge about how the township can become self-sufficient in economic growth.
