Kids as young as 3 years old are now aware about what gender-based violence is, how to prevent it, and how to report it if they witness it.

DYP was started by some concerned citizens of Diepsloot who wanted to make a change in their deprived community. They wanted to create awareness among everyone, no matter how young or old they are. Youth leaders came up with this idea and now it is being successfully implemented across Diepsloot. It’s not just a program run by the Youth leaders alone – every school will be running this program and spreading awareness about gender based violence

Gender-based violence is on the rise in South Africa, and it’s an issue that’s not just affecting women but men as well. In fact, it’s estimated that 1 in 3 men have experienced gender-based violence at some point in their lives. So what can be done to end this scourge?

Diepsloot Youth Project has been working tirelessly for over a decade to end gender-based violence and inequality. And their work is paying off – slowly but surely, Diepsloot is becoming a safer place for everyone. Gender based violence is a global issue and affects different societies at different levels. It has gripped the slums of Diepsloot, a place where only women live in fear of being victimised by their partners every day. Women here have become so accustomed to gender-based violence that they no longer talk about it out loud, lest someone hears them, and gets offended.

Mostly perpetrated by men who think they can get away with it, or are provoked into committing these crimes when women speak up for themselves, the crime takes on many forms – from verbal harassment to forced sex or even murder. This is why we call on all men to join us in taking a stand against gender-based violence. Because when all women are empowered and safe, then our world will be one where everyone can live in peace.
