Growing up in a poor township like Diepsloot can make you feel lost and confused about where you belong. You could be from the same caste, but how does that translate to the world? And what is it that drives people to live their lives the way they do? These are questions that youth at Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP) are trying to answer. Through film screenings, discussions and activities, they’re spreading messages of positivity and perseverance. They’re building a better tomorrow for all – together!
When a neighbourhood is plagued with crime, it’s only natural that residents’ flair for self-defence also thrives. Diepsloot Youth Project provides a platform where these skills can be honed and polished. The aim is to create a safe environment where youth are empowered to stand up against crime and abuse. We teach them how to defend themselves using weapons such as sticks, knives, or even empty cans. They also learn how to tangle with an opponent and unleash their hidden power.
DYP offers classes in various age groups on Sundays from 2:30pm – 6:00pm at Noordhoek Centre. There’s a waitlist for new enrollees so start making your name on the list!
Youth unemployment is a serious issue that needs to be addressed immediately. Youth need to be equipped with the right skills, have access to training programs, and most importantly, have a chance to build a career. With programs like computer classes and youth entrepreneurship development programs, they are helping build the future of the township.
Let’s work together towards building a better world for all!
Youth unemployment is a serious issue in South Africa. A staggering 40% of all unemployed youth are between the ages of 15 and 24. And many of them have never held a job before. The Diepsloot Youth Project aims to change this by providing young people with employment and training opportunities so that they can gain skills and confidence to build their future. The project runs programs in three areas: digital media, fashion design, and business management.
You cannot just skip away from the problems in your area and hope it gets resolved. You have to be proactive and make changes yourself. Youth empowerment is something that requires dedication and understanding on every level. The youth of Diepsloot have now found a way to do so. They have tied up with a renowned youth project called Diepsloot Youth Project that has been working tirelessly towards the same goal.
The motto of the project is ‘build them up, not break them down. By teaching young people about the importance of life skills, future planning, and financial literacy, these young people are being empowered to make their own decisions in life.
