‘Flipped’ classrooms are nothing new in schools, but students and teachers at Diepsloot Youth Project’s Itirele-Zenzele Secondary School are changing the way they teach by flipping their classes online. The initiative is designed to help learners get the best possible education by giving them access to quality education online. The pupils have been enrolled in this school after they won a local competition. The school’s principal, Cynthia Ndabaning, explains how flipping helps them keep up with classwork and prepares them for future studies.

Diepsloot is a beautiful township located in Johannesburg. It is home to young people with hopes and aspirations, who want to make a difference. Youth Project Itirele-Zenzele Secondary School – Diepsloot is making sure that these young people are not just heard but also seen. The project aims to empower the youth by fostering social inclusion and encouraging positive change. Youth leaders are groomed, equipped with skills and resources necessary to effect positive change in their communities.

The school’s curriculum teaches the importance of inclusion and celebrates diversity while developing young leaders to take on the world and make it a better place.

The school is located in the heart of Diepsloot with a population of about 20 000 people. It is the only school that is registered and funded by the Education Department for the education of disadvantaged children from disadvantaged backgrounds. The curriculum is carried out with an emphasis on using multimedia tools and resources to engage, excite, and inspire learners.

The school has recently embarked on a project which aims to build a state-of-the-art facility for the students who enrol at the school. They hope to provide them with access to quality education and create a conducive learning environment where they can thrive and flourish.

It’s a school, but it’s more than that. It’s a home for every child who walks through its doors. No matter what school they belong to, no matter how old they are, the Youth Project welcomes them with open arms into a nurturing and caring environment. They are encouraged to learn and grow as individuals while being part of a community. The school is not just an institution of learning; it’s a center of strength where every child feels valued and appreciated.

This school has been making a difference in the lives of students from new learners to those who are already making strides in their educational careers by teaching them valuable life skills and morals. It is no doubt that the Youth Project has become one of the most popular schools for children across the neighborhood. Every day, there are new faces entering its buildings and classrooms, eager to learn and experience something new about themselves and their community.

This is why we call it home.

It is a school that has been working tirelessly to make a difference in the lives of its students. Itirele-Zenzele Secondary School – Diepsloot is located in South Africa’s largest informal settlement and runs on a tuition-free model. Since it started more than 25 years ago, it has seen countless children graduate from the school with degrees in nursing, engineering, and business administration. The youth project aims to empower these graduates to become leaders who are committed to community development.

“The youth project is changing lives right here in Diepsloot,” says Sizakele Nkosi, director of the youth project and owner of a manufacturing company. “It provides young people with access to quality education that equips them for success in their chosen field. And it gives them the confidence they need to make a positive difference in the world.”
