The youth of Diepsloot are making a difference in their community by providing support and resources to the underprivileged.’ That’s how Youth Project Johannesburg describes its work in Diepsloot. Youth Project Johannesburg has a long history of working with slum children and young people, providing them with opportunities and resources so that they can reach their full potential.
At Diepsloot Youth Project, we understand the challenges faced by children living in a slum, because we’ve lived them ourselves. When we started our work there, many years ago, our main focus was on education – but we quickly realised that access to health care and other resources was also vital for these children. That’s why we provide them with these services free of charge. And because we know that it takes a village to raise a child, we also run programs aimed at improving the lives of both children and their parents.
We’re excited about what lies ahead for Diepsloot – and so are the many children and young people who call this slum home!
We all know that the most disadvantaged people are slum-dwellers. And many people consider them as inferior and plagued with vice and crime.
The youth of Diepsloot slum in Johannesburg, South Africa have taken a stand against such ignorant perceptions. Through their Project, they are making a difference in the lives of their community by providing life-skills education and empowerment through various vocational training programs. They also engage in cleanliness drive, health awareness initiatives, and other social activities that change lives for better.
A place where you feel lost and confused, where the only way to survive is by fighting for your rights. This is the youth of Johannesburg’s Diepsloot slum. Its residents are facing a lot of issues in their daily lives, but they never give up. They stand up for what they believe in and fight till their last breath!
The Diepsloot Youth Project is an initiative that aims to empower these youths to become strong leaders who can change their community for the better. It offers them basic education so that they can compete with the students of any school and also helps them find jobs so that they can contribute to the economy. In addition, it operates a drop-in centre where they can come and socialise with other young people and get free food, clothes, medical assistance and more!
Join us in our efforts to make a difference in this underprivileged community!
Diepsloot is one of the largest and poorest urban communities in Johannesburg. Crime, drugs and unemployment are rampant in this area. But Diepsloot Youth Project aims to change that through empowerment and education. Youth from the community are given a chance to be part of something big, and that’s why we’re proud to be a part of this project.
The youth project works on various levels – from workshops, to skills development and job awareness. They also provide access to food for those who need it most, so that they can have a better life. This is why DYP is changing the way slums are viewed – it’s time we start closing them down!
When you think of Johannesburg, what springs to mind? The financial hub of Africa, the heart of the continent’s entertainment industry, perhaps a tale of hustle and bustle? For many slum-dwellers in Johannesburg, it is none of those things. It is the Diepsloot Youth Project. Situated on one of the most notorious slums in South Africa, this project serves as a refuge for these forgotten children who are often seen as nothing more than unwanted burdens on society’s doorsteps. They come from different backgrounds and find solace and support here.
Project Manager Gerda van Niekerk explains that outreach has been important for the organization for years now: “The outreach team has been visiting Diepsloot youths through various programs to provide them with counselling services, health education and life skills.” Sessions like yoga and martial arts are also part of their program to help improve their wellbeing.
With such efforts being made to uplift them and provide them with opportunities that they deserve, it’s time we start seeing Diepsloot youth as something other than ‘undeserving’ or ‘unwanted’.”
