A gang rape in South Africa is a terrifying experience for any woman, but many don’t feel safe coming out to talk about it. What’s even more disheartening is when the perpetrator is someone close to you – a friend, family member or colleague.
According to statistics from Diepsloot Youth Project (TYP), nearly half of the men in Diepsloot have raped or physically-assaulted a woman. As shocking as this sounds, this problem isn’t new – it’s been around for years. But now, there’s finally a way to end it.
TYP wants to change this culture of violence and teach men not to take advantage of women and girls. We do this by providing them with resources and education about respecting women and girls. We want our community members to stand up against gender-based violence and be leaders in creating a safer environment for all genders. We believe that everyone has the right to live free from violence, and we will continue working hard so that everyone can feel safe no matter their gender identity or sexual orientation.
A new report by the Gender Violence Task Team of Diepsloot has revealed that more than half of the men in the area have raped or beaten a woman, prompting calls for action from women’s rights groups and state leaders.
The report was released after a survey of 1,025 Diepsloot residents between March 28 and April 4 this year. The aim was to understand the scope of gender-based violence (GBV) in the area, its causes and consequences, and needs of survivors. At least 70% percent respondents felt unsafe after sunset in their concerned wards. Most women were unaware that reporting rape is free and confidential, even on accounts of minors. Also, most had heard about Take Back Our Streets program but not about an Eradication Program. Moreover, 21% respondents had witnessed violence since they were 18 years old while 14% had been subjected to it before 18 years old.”There is no way we can remain silent on this issue any longer,” said Khanyisa Mathebula, Gender Justice lead for Gauteng & North West.
If you’re walking in Diepsloot and have been sexually or physically abused, know that this program is here for you. The youth project of the same name aims to provide patients with healthcare services, emotional support and information about sexual abuse. The project also facilitates communication between the survivor and police, which helps them in the investigation process.
It’s important to stand up for yourself and report crime when it occurs. Help end sexual violence in Diepsloot by supporting the people who are working hard every day to put an end to it!
Sexual violence is a global issue and knows no boundaries. It is an international challenge that needs global solutions. Youth are the future leaders and they have a huge role to play in eliminating this menace.
Diepsloot Youth Project came up with a novel idea to make Diepsloot as safer for women as possible. They created the ‘Walk Alone’ initiative, which educates women about the importance of walking alone at night without fear, and increases their confidence on the streets of Diepsloot by providing them with safety kits containing reflective clothing, whistles, and mobile phone numbers of local women’s shelters.
We encourage you to walk alone from now on!
Youth are not afraid to speak up against heinous crimes like rape or abuse, but they find it difficult to do so in their own neighborhood. This project is helping them understand that they too can be a voice for the voiceless and stand up for the ones who cannot. Youth from all walks of life have come forward and said that they have been raped or beaten by men in their locality.
The youth of Diepsloot have shown us what true grit and determination look like, and we are proud of you!
