When a community is completely neglected, it has no choice but to be in the throes of chaos. This is the unfortunate reality for Diepsloot, Johannesburg’s largest informal settlement. Over the years, violence has been a common feature here and lives have been lost in mob attacks. But yesterday, something extraordinary happened – one person was killed by an unknown assailant in a mob attack.

There is a place in Johannesburg where the youths call home. Situated at the heart of the metropolis, Diepsloot is a vibrant hub that offers a variety of entertainment and livelihood opportunities to its residents.

One such youth decided to give it a shot one day by working at a nearby popular eatery. But when he got caught up in an unplanned altercation, things took an unexpected turn. As he lay on the ground bleeding out, he looked up and saw hundreds of people running towards him. He died before he could even understand what was going on around him. This was his second death in less than 24 hours – and yet, life goes on for these young men and women.

Over the years, there has been an increase in crimes taking place in Diepsloot. While most of them are petty thefts and street fights, some are more serious. On Monday night, a crime that shook the locals to their core took place there. A young man named ‘Faris’ was stabbed to death by a mob near his shop in the neighbourhood. It is said that he died while being rushed to a hospital nearby. While no arrests have been made so far, the police are still investigating the matter.<br />

There have been many times when locals have been attacked by unruly mobs just because they look different or because they somehow disturb their way of life. This is a new day, where we all stand united against hate crimes and violence. Let’s show our youth how we wished to be treated and let us stand up for what is right!

A shocking video of a mob beating a person to death in Diepsloot, Johannesburg, went viral online about three days back. The nature of the crime and the manner in which the violence happened has left everyone stunned. As per reports, one person was killed by a mob in an unprovoked attack on Friday night. What has also gone viral on social media is the statement made by Diepsloot mayor Mpho Tshele who said that there is no law and order problem in their municipality and that they are ‘cracking down’ on criminals.

This statement only goes to show that there is a major problem brewing under-the-radar in a lot of places around the world, but we cannot see it because our eyes remain glued to social media feeds or TV screens.

The residents of Diepsloot, Johannesburg have been living in fear for a long time. The recent killing of one person in a mob attack has brought the situation to limelight once again.
