Diepsloot is one of the most impoverished corners of our country. It has been described as a ‘forgotten district’ and is home to millions who are trapped in poverty, illiteracy and unemployment. The youth of Diepsloot project aims to change this by providing education, healthcare and other assistance to these people. An oasis in the middle of a densely populated area, Diepsloot Youth Project has become a haven for stray dogs, cats and even pigs. Located at Noord 5 street, Diepsloot, the project is run by volunteers and aims to provide these animals with shelter, food and medical care. In fact, it is one of the few projects in South Africa that have succeeded in providing food for stray animals on a daily basis.

According to an interview with Mandy Ferreira (founder of DYP) by Daisy Loveday for Business Insider Africa:

“We started Diepsloot Youth Project because we noticed there was a need. The area is generally referred to as slum territory but there are some underprivileged people who reside there and we wanted to help improve their lives,” said Mandy Ferreira. “There were dogs roaming around freely so they would fetch them food everyday if they were hungry or they would get them water if they were thirsty.”

“They also took them to the doctor when needed so it was basically like running an orphanage but only for stray dogs.”

The youth of the Diepsloot initiative has been making a lot of progress in the last few years. The team is constantly working on improving their homes, providing education and uplifting them from the deep pit they are in. We aim to give them the tools they need to become successful adults who are able to take care of themselves and their families.

They are the forgotten people of our society, the poor, starving and homeless. In one of the posh areas of Johannesburg, you will find them living on the streets. They do not get noticed by anyone except for the organization Diepsloot Youth Project. The youth program knows how to bring out their hidden talents and teach them how to live with dignity. The project works round the clock so that no one is ignored or left behind.
