The youth and children of Diepsloot are constantly harassed, oppressed and attacked. Many have lost their lives because of it. But they didn’t give up. They knew that one day justice would prevail, and it did in the form of a raid by the South African Police Service (SAPS). On Sunday, 5th November 2015, during a routine patrol operation at the Diepsloot Youth Project, a team of SAPS officials arrested 42 undocumented foreign nationals living in squalid conditions without proper access to food and water.

“Now we can rest in peace,” said 35-year-old Naja from Niger while shedding tears of joy and relief. “I was always scared that one day I will be picked up by police or someone else just for being me. But today I feel safe.”

Naja is one among many who have been through hell because of their undocumented identity in South Africa. And now she knows that the kindest strangers can be found on our streets calling themselves ‘youth project’ for the sake of helping others, providing shelter, food, clothing and medical facilities to those who need it most.

Foreign nationals are booked for crimes in every country. Why should it be any different in a city like Johannesburg where millions of people from across the world live and work? Thanks to the Youth Project, that question may soon get an answer. The project was started by a local who has seen first-hand how foreign nationals are treated with disrespect and impunity in the city. The project is tackling the issue head on by providing shelter, food and clothing to these vulnerable people while they wait for their cases to be heard in court.

In partnership with Undocussing, Diepsloot Youth Project aims to create a safe space where undocumented foreign nationals can feel welcome and accepted. We will continue working towards creating a more equitable society where all people are treated equally regardless of their background or status.

They are not just any foreigners arrested in Diepsloot. These undocumented immigrants have been sent to different jails across the country. They have been detained and deported by the government for committing a crime that they might not even understand.

Starting with sewing machines, books and clothes, these youth have been making sure the detained men know they are cared for while they’re away from their families and loved ones. They also provide them with information about their rights so that when they return home, they can defend themselves against any accusations or misunderstandings.

With so many undocumented immigrants being deported every day, it’s safe to say that this project is a vital one. The youth deserve our praise for giving them a voice, and for ensuring that these valuable individuals are protected and well-cared for until their time comes.

Nobody knows where they come from, how long they have been here, or who is looking after them. Unfortunately, this describes many undocumented foreign nationals in the city of Johannesburg. They are arrested for committing a crime and then released, to be at the mercy of their new community. Diepsloot Youth Project aims to change that by creating safe space for these young people to learn new skills and build their future. The project’s aim is to educate youth on the importance of respecting different cultures while also giving them an opportunity to earn an income by providing them with basic skills and training.

Donate today so we can continue making a difference in the lives of our community!

The youth call the shots these days. Why should it be any different when it comes to politics and social issues? Be it voting, protesting, or volunteering, young people are taking an active role in shaping their neighbourhoods and communities. Diepsloot Youth Project has been doing just that for the past 2 years. Undertaking projects such as street plays, art exhibitions, producing documentaries on local issues, and organising youth forums and trainings on social issues, DYP is paving way for a more informed generation.<br>

What started as just a few youths getting together to provide entertainment to each other has grown immensely into a global movement. And today they’re calling themselves leaders of tomorrow!
