When I got home from school one day, my mother told me about a girl being beaten up by a group of boys. Her face was swollen and bruised, her clothes torn and soaked in blood. She was screaming for help, but no one came to her rescue. I couldn’t believe what was happening in our neighborhood! And then I felt sick to my stomach knowing that it could happen to any girl on the street – regardless if they’re rich or poor, beautiful or plain. That is why we formed the Diepsloot Youth Project: to raise awareness about gender-based violence and empower young girls to be strong and brave like their male counterparts.

Our team includes volunteers from all backgrounds who understand the importance of supporting our girls so that they can reach their fullest potential in life! Whether you’re an expert on gender issues or just want to lend a hand, we welcome your participation! Together we can make a difference!

Every day, children are subjected to gender-based violence in South Africa. In a country where men and women are equal under the law, this is a shocking reality that women have to deal with on a daily basis. While many people think of gender-based violence as something that happens only in other parts of the world, our project Diepsloot Youth Project aims to change the notion by educating people about it and its consequences. Understanding Gender-Based Violence isn’t easy when you don’t see it or witness it everyday but with our program, we want to make sure that everyone knows what it means and why it’s so important to talk about.

It’s a common phenomenon seen in most households. It’s the moment when your family is attacked by outsiders and you have to protect what’s yours. Well, this time it’s not just the family but also a youth center that comes under the attack! Who knows what has been going on in there? But do something about it because violence isn’t okay! Join us at Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP) where we’re committed to creating safe spaces for youth.

Innovative programs like Girls’ Space, which offers free counseling services, free legal aid, and other resources for female survivors of gender-based violence are making a difference. We’re also working hard to prevent abuse on our campus by hosting seminars and workshops so students can learn how to stay safe online. So come check out why hundreds of students flock here every year!

When children begin to suspect that their parents are not the perfect people they once thought them to be, it’s time for a change. It’s time to get involved with an organization that will take care of them and teach them about gender-based violence and abuse.
