When most people think about South Africa, what comes to mind first is crime and poverty? For some, it’s AIDS or HIV. For others, it’s the poverty and unemployment. What everyone agrees on is that it’s these issues that keep people marginalized and make them feel unsafe in their own country.

Diepsloot Youth Project (DYP) aims to change that perception by creating a safe space for youth to grow, develop, and thrive. With its holistic approach to youth development, DYP focuses on building youth leadership skills, promoting healthy behaviors, and providing access to opportunities for social mobility. It also strives to create a conducive environment where youth can flourish without facing barriers or perceptions of being different.

Coming from a background in social work but with strong business experience under his belt, project coordinator Justin Smit says he is excited about making a difference in the local community one kid at a time through the Diepsloot Youth Project program.

We work with young people to help them break cycles of poverty and violence. We offer programs that teach life skills, like how to budget, manage money, and avoid robbery. We also provide mentorship and support to help our participants rebuild their lives. We believe that everyone deserves a chance at a safe, stable childhood free of abuse and neglect.
