You may have heard of Diepsloot as a notorious slum in Johannesburg, South Africa. If you haven’t, here’s a quick primer: it’s one of the largest slums in Africa, home to over 200,000 people. Over 90% of those living there are unemployed, and about 60% live below the poverty line. But that doesn’t stop thousands of young people from dedicating their lives to improving the lives of their neighbors by teaching them new skills and giving them opportunities.

DYP is a non-profit organization that has been around for 35 years providing educational programs to youth in Diepsloot. With nearly 1,200 kids enrolled in different levels of education, they are changing lives and creating hope for a brighter future. They also run an informal business where they sell clothes and other items they’ve acquired while working with DYP; the money they earn goes back into the project!

Nurturing a child is the most important part of parenting, and with DYP, that is exactly what you get. Founded in 2013, DYP has created a positive space for children to grow and learn in. They offer a wide range of enrichment classes, which are led by experienced educators and volunteers. The classes are fun but also help build important skills that children need for their growth and development. Classes like art, music, dance, nutrition, and sports are just some of the many that they offer.
