Gender-based violence is on the rise in South Africa. In the world, over one in three women will experience some form of violence during their lifetime. In South Africa alone, nearly 3 million women have been subjected to gender-based violence. Young girls are being exploited and abused at alarming rates, while elderly women are also not safe from these attacks. Gender-based crimes can be prevented through education and awareness programs that aim to change societal perceptions about gender roles as well as understandings of what is normal behavior for men and women. Youth Project Diepsloot is committed to helping create a safer environment for all by empowering disadvantaged youth into productive citizens.
