We all know that social media is a part of our lives now. Whether it’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or Snapchat, we’re all connected online and on the go. But how much do we know about how these apps affect people’s mental health?
Diepsloot Youth Projects understands the importance of social media and its impact on youth mental health. As such, they’re hosting a talk session titled “Understanding Social Media and Youth Mental Health” at their headquarters to bring awareness to this issue. Our youth today are very tech-savvy and exposed to various forms of social media, so why not learn more about it? This session will be held at 6 p.m., on Wednesday 26th November 2016 at Diepsloot Youth Projects’ headquarters in room 324 (map here: https://goo.gl/maps/AHR6T). We hope you’ll join us!
The world is changing at a rapid pace, and social media is just one of the many ways in which we are adapting. However, new technologies can be daunting for young people who haven’t yet had the chance to learn how to navigate them properly. At Diepsloot Youth Projects, we understand that understanding social media can help empower our youth and improve their mental health, so we offer workshops on this topic every month.
By knowing how these technologies work and how they affect our lives as individuals and as a society, we are better equipped to manage our online identities and make informed decisions about what information we share online. We look forward to continuing our work with you in this important area!
Youth today have the ability to access social media from anywhere and at any time. They can share their thoughts, express themselves, and speak about anything they want. However, this ease of access has also created a new set of challenges for youth that require significant attention. Understanding Social Media And Youth Mental Health is an initiative by Diepsloot Youth Projects aimed to understand the needs of youth in South Africa in regards to their mental health online. We came up with this idea because we noticed that there was a need for a platform where young people can share their issues anonymously so that those around them can understand and support them better.
Youth are more addicted to social media these days than cigarettes, alcohol and drugs. The reasons are obvious; a huge chunk of their time is spent on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter apps.
We think it’s time for change! Join us at Diepsloot Youth Projects for an interactive session about social media and youth mental health. Learn what the risks of excessive use are, how to set limits with your kids on their usage and discuss ways to cope with depression and anxiety if they’re already suffering from it. We’ll also be offering some important tools you can use to monitor and track their online activity safely.
